Heavy rains are due to move into Southwest Washington this afternoon as a virtual firehose of tropical moisture aims itself at the region.

Winds are already beginning to develop and will continue to build throughout the morning, according to a 5:45 a.m. statement from the National Weather Service in Portland.

Gusts in excess of 40 mph could cause tree branches laden with leaves to break and fall, causing damage to power lines and possible interfering with driving. To see the latest on Washington freeways, visit WSDOT’s website. ODOT information is on its TripCheck website.

Soaking rains that will bring 2 inches or more of precipitation to the metro area are expected to hit this afternoon. It will be even wetter on the coast and in the mountains.

As of 7 a.m. it was 60 degrees at Pearson Field in Vancouver. Winds were about 10 mph and .01 of an inch of rain had fallen in the last hour.
