Letter: Don’t give up freedom: ‘No’ on I-594

The Columbian

Initiative 594 is just another lie being fed to Americans under the cloak of public safety. Whether you are a firearms enthusiast or an occasional shooter, or someone who does not own a firearm, we are all Americans who live in the freest country in the world and it needs to stay that way.

The sponsors of this travesty against our Constitution and Bill of Rights: Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Paul Allen, spent millions. Yet all of the criminal behavior studies, and there are many, conclude that theft from residences and gun shops, straw purchasers who are illegally buying guns for criminals, and a few Federal Firearms License holders who sell on the black market are the venues for criminals to get firearms.

This bill starts out benign, claiming it’s closing a gun show loophole. Where is that hole because every show I have been to you buy from dealers or citizens and you undergo a background check on the spot. If I buy on the Internet the firearm is sent to an FFL gun shop and again I have a background check conducted on the spot.

This is about one giant step toward universal government control of our firearms and one of the most important freedoms carefully ensured by our Founding Fathers, right after the right to freedom of speech.
