Letter: Responsible action is to pass I-594

I believe passing Initiative 594 is the responsible thing to do for our communities. All my life I have believed in taking actions that bring safety, peace and sensibility to our communities.

Right now in Washington state, there’s a loophole in our law that makes it far too easy for a convicted felon or domestic abuser to buy a handgun from a stranger at a gun show or online with no questions asked. Initiative 594 closes the loophole while respecting the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms by ensuring everyone buying a gun in Washington state goes through the same background check, no matter where they buy it or who they buy it from.

This initiative will get results. Colorado recently passed legislation similar to Initiative 594, and in one year, hundreds of prohibited purchasers have been prevented from obtaining firearms, including a convicted murderer.

I-594 will make our communities more safe and secure. Join me in passing I-594.
