2. Martians have invaded

On Oct. 30, 1938, Orson Welles performed his infamous radio drama “War of the Worlds.” To commemorate the broadcast’s 76th anniversary, the Willamette Radio Workshop will re-create the show for a live audience, using voice actors and sound effects. “Martians with Moustaches,” a retrospective of work by Washington State University Vancouver’s Creative Media and Digital Culture program, also will be on display. The radio play begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. Admission is free. Visit www.radionouspace.net/projects-reimaginedradio.html

3. Early Halloween

Try out those costumes early with the Costume Ball for Kids. Children can try out their costumes, dance to a live band, take pictures in the photo booth and pop bubbles. The event runs 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 25 in the Columbia Room at Vancouver Community Library, 901 C St., Vancouver. Admission is free. Call 360-906-5106 or visit www.fvrl.org

There’s also a Boo Bash in downtown Camas, where local businesses will give out candy and Halloween prizes to costumed children from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 29 along Fourth Avenue, Camas. Admission is free. Call 360-216-7378 or visit www.downtowncamas.com

4. Folk fun

Enjoy a free concert during the Harvest Hootenanny Festival with folk band the Stellar Fellars. Musicians Howard Pelky, Ray Dowdy and Brian Pelky will sing classic songs from the 1960s folk era. Appetizers and beverages will be provided. The event is hosted by the Meals on Wheels People. The concert runs 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Firstenburg Community Center, 700 N.E. 136th St., Vancouver. Admission is free. Call 360-597-5711 or visit www.mealsonwheelspeople.org

5. All kinds of spirits

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry has a night of science and scares for adults. “Spirits: Ghosts, Goblins & Whiskey” is the theme of this month’s OMSI After Dark, featuring a tasting of spirits crafted by local distilleries, a murder mystery game, a lecture on mortuary science and performances by BodyVox and the AWOL Dance Collective. Halloween costumes encouraged. The event is 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 29 at OMSI, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland. Admission for ages 21 and older is $13; it’s $25 for admission plus the tasting package.
