Letter: Honor intent of ADA guarantees

The Columbian
Published: October 23, 2014, 5:00pm

The Americans with Disabilities Act “guarantees the civil rights of people with disabilities by prohibiting the discrimination against anyone who has a mental or physical disability in the area of employment, public services, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunication.”

People without disabilities are unfairly using the opportunities provided for people with disabilities. A few people without disabilities take advantage of the ADA permit abusing the intended parking privilege. Perhaps their significant other has a disability and is not in the vehicle, yet the driver unfairly uses the privilege. As observed, these folks walk briskly into the establishment without obvious hindrance.

People are fined for even having one’s car tires on the yellow lines of the disability parking spot. Apparently, improper and unfair use of the ADA is not being monitored.

Shame on those people who park in the parking provisions for people with disabilities and have no disabilities other than selfishness, unfairness, and little concern for the intent and opportunities provided in the ADA. Park farther away and enjoy the gift of being able to walk without the pains and problems of those people with disabilities requiring wheels, crutches, and other forms of assistance to do their business of the day.

Honor the ADA by showing respect for people with disabilities and opportunities provided for them.
