Clarkston to weigh banning marijuana sales

The Columbian
Published:

CLARKSTON — A town on the border of Washington and Idaho will weigh a ban on marijuana sales.

The Lewiston Tribune reports the Clarkston City Council on Monday will discuss a ban on recreational marijuana sales throughout the city.

Clarkston has had a moratorium on the production, processing and sales of marijuana since last December.

Ban proponents say pot sales would negatively impact Clarkston businesses. The drug could cause new addiction problems among residents and get into the hands of children.

Ban opponents say revenue from taxing marijuana could help fund law enforcement and drug education efforts. They say lifting the ban would create “marijuana tourism” fueled by people crossing over from Idaho.

If the council opposes a ban, business owners could begin sales after the moratorium ends on Nov. 30.
