State Rep. Roger Freeman died Wednesday at age 48 after battling cancer for the past year.

Freeman, a Democrat from Federal Way, died at St. Francis Hospital in his hometown, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported.

Freeman, who was diagnosed with colon cancer early last year, had been optimistic he would be able to serve a second term, even after he started receiving treatment for liver cancer.

Previously a Federal Way City Council member, Freeman was elected to his first term in the Legislature in 2012.

Gov. Jay Inslee said his thoughts are with Freeman’s family. Freeman is survived by his wife, Sonya, and two children.
