Speed likely caused crash with school bus

Driving too fast for road conditions appears to be the primary factor in Tuesday’s vehicle crash that injured 11 people, including four children on a school bus, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

No citations have been issued yet in the Yacolt-area crash, which deputies say was caused by a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Joel Kysar, 40, of Amboy. The crash, however, remains under investigation by traffic detectives in the sheriff’s office.

Kysar was driving the Explorer north on Northeast Amboy Road just before 1 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line just south of Northeast 381st Street, and sideswiped a school bus carrying 35 children, according to Sgt. Dennis Pritchard.

The Explorer then continued north, into the path of a southbound 2002 Toyota pickup. Those two vehicles collided head-on and the pickup left the roadway, went down an embankment and rolled, Pritchard said.

Three occupants in the Explorer, four occupants in the pickup and four children aboard the school bus were injured. None of the injuries were critical or life-threatening, Pritchard said.

The four Amboy Middle School students aboard the school bus, ages 10 to 13, sustained minor injuries. The bus was transporting the students to Yacolt Primary School.

The occupants of the Explorer, Joel Kysar, his twin brother, James Kysar, and Joel Kysar’s 15-year-old son, were all injured, Pritchard said. So were the pickup’s driver, Edgardo Nunez, his wife, Janie Trevino-Nunez, and their daughters, ages 5 and 10. All seven were taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

Joel Kysar, James Kysar, Nunez and Trevino-Nunez were treated and discharged from the emergency room Tuesday, according to hospital staff.

The names of the children hurt in the crash were not released.
