BELLINGHAM — Police say a man who robbed a bank in Bellingham calmly waited for officers to arrive and told them he did it because he was going to be homeless and needed a place to stay.
Documents filed in Whatcom County Superior Court accuse 64-year-old Richard K. Gorton of the Oct. 14 robbery.
Gorton lived at the Lincoln Square apartment complex, which is run by the Bellingham Housing Authority. Officials declined to comment on Gorton but residents told The Bellingham Herald he was being evicted, apparently for damaging building computers.
Charging papers say Gorton handed the bank teller a robbery note, put $1,400 in a backpack and waited outside for police. He was not armed.
