A grass fire in the median of Interstate 5 burned about 1.5 acres Tuesday afternoon and slowed traffic in both directions.

The fire was reported near Northeast 219th Street south of Ridgefield around 1 p.m. When Fire District 6 firefighters arrived to find flames, they asked for additional firefighters from Clark County Fire & Rescue, said Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy. Smoke from the fire drifted across the freeway.

While they put out the fire, the inside lanes in both directions were closed, delaying traffic for about 40 minutes. The Washington State Patrol helped with traffic control.

“It’s a good reminder that we’re still in fire season even though it’s overcast and cooler,” Dawdy said. “We really want people to be careful.”

The cause of the fire was not determined.
