UW Madison announces spring graduates

A local student graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the spring commencement ceremony.

Jack Thomas Foerster of Camas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental studies.

Jon Huntsman Jr. delivered the charge to graduates at the ceremony, which was held at Camp Randall Stadium on May 17.


WSU Vancouver to celebrate 25th anniversary

As part of its yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, Washington State University Vancouver will host a major festival in the quad, from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

It is free and open to the public, and includes food, music, art, historical exhibits, kids’ activities and more.

There will be an open house from 3 to 5 p.m., where attendees can get a free reusable grocery bag, balloon animal, work on a sidewalk-chalk mural, sample cheese, eat cupcakes, attend informational seminars, take guided campus tours, read with a service dog and more.

There will be live music from 5:30 to 8 p.m., which begins with alternative/folk/rock band Lincoln’s Beard from Vancouver. Sean Flinn & The Royal We, a popular Portland-area band, will perform at 7 p.m. Food will be available for purchase and picnics are welcome. No alcohol or firearms are allowed.

WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave.

Camas Library hosts sleepover

Kids in first- through sixth-grade and their parents are invited to a free sleepover at the Camas Public Library on Friday, Sept. 26.

Attendees can play games, watch a movie, make crafts, hear stories and sleep in the library. Pizza will be served for dinner. Participants are asked to bring sleeping bags, pajamas, library cards and air mattresses if needed. Advance sign-up is required and there is a limit of 25 kids.

Call 834-4692 or come to the library to sign up in person. All kids must attend with an adult.

Once admitted, families must be at the library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave., by 7 p.m. and they can stay until 7 a.m.

Page Turners book discussion group returns

The Page Turners book discussion group for students in fourth-grade and older, and their parents, will start up again after a summer break at the Camas Public Library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave.

The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Participants can sign out a special copy of the book before the meeting. Parent and child both read the book, attend the meeting and keep a copy of the book. There will also be snacks and an activity.

This month’s book is “Matilda” by Roald Dahl.

Top 10 readers announced

The results are in from the Camas Public Library’s summer reading program.

The top 10 readers are: Megan Cheng (17,155 minutes), Alex Hostetler (12,370 minutes), Erin Cheng (11,950 minutes), Asia Crook (10,839 minutes), Carly Pinch (10,400 minutes), Noah Dangerfield (7,154 minutes), Ari Ahdieh (7,140 minutes), Maddox Edwards (6,295 minutes), Zach Ager (6,030 minutes) and Sasha Greer (6,020 minutes).

Winners received a certificate and $10 Barnes and Noble gift card from the library.

Grandparents brunch will be held Sunday

Columbia Ridge event to include back-to-school supply drive

Individuals of all ages are invited to enjoy a grandparents brunch at Columbia Ridge Senior Living.

The event will be held Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $10 per person.

Columbia Ridge is located at 2800 W. Ninth St., Washougal.

Brunch attendees are invited to participate in a back-to-school supply drive for Woodburn Elementary School, in Camas. Suggested items to bring in include pencils, notebooks, folders, binders and glue sticks.

There is a donation bin in the Columbia Ridge lobby. Some of the residents volunteer to read with second-grade students at Woodburn.

University of Oregon confers degrees at 2014 summer commencement

A Washougal resident was among 1,117 students who graduated during the University of Oregon summer commencement Aug. 16.

Blake W. Casebeer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.

A total of 1,169 degrees were distributed.

The University of Oregon, located in Eugene on a 295-acre campus, was founded in 1876.

The university offers academic excellence and hands-on learning opportunities in more than 200 academic programs that range from Eugene to Portland and from the coast to the mountains.
