Letter: Litterers abound in Clark County

The Columbian
Published: September 3, 2014, 5:00pm

I was sitting in my office, looking out the window and saw a car pass, its driver throwing bags of trash at every mailbox. I went to look at what they had thrown, and it was a small Yellow Pages directory. Every mailbox on my street and probably in the entire neighborhood was defiled with this unasked-for trash. Why are they allowed to do this?

Many years ago, I delivered phone books to support my family. I was required to place each one neatly beside (not in front of) the door to the apartment or home. Auditors would later call to see if I had done my job. If the book was misplaced, I did not get paid.

It seems like we have allowed a commercial enterprise to trash our community without penalty. Littering costs the community in appearance, clean-up costs and pride. The only option I have is to get online and remove my address from the delivery list. I ask each one of you to do the same. If you don’t use the directory, please opt out of delivery. You will save a tree in its production, gas in distribution and delivery, your time to pick it up and throw it in the recycle bin, and our community from urban litter.
