Construction crews from Skanska arrived at Clark College on Wednesday morning with heavy equipment and started preparation for a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics facility on a campus west of Fort Vancouver Way. The site formerly was a parking lot for the Clark College Foundation.

Crews bulldozed trees, began moving earth and built a construction fence around the entire site along East Fourth Plain Boulevard and Fort Vancouver Way. Construction fencing and equipment have affected vehicle and pedestrian access to the foundation office.

The parking lot between the foundation and the T building has been eliminated. Foundation visitors can use two parking spaces on Fourth Plain. All foot traffic to the foundation is accessible only from Fourth Plain.

Walkers who previously cut through the woods on Fourth Plain to access the campus will not be able to do so, but must walk up Fort Vancouver Way. Bus riders coming to campus should not get off on Fourth Plain, but come up to Fort Vancouver Way.

Available parking: All lots east of Fort Vancouver Way are open. West of Fort Vancouver Way, the purple parking lot, accessible from Fort Vancouver Way, is open. There is street parking on Fort Vancouver Way.

Closed parking: Yellow lot 1 south of the T building, accessed from Fort Vancouver Way, is under construction but will reopen Oct. 4. Yellow lot 2 north of the T building is closed.

Walkers/bikers: Construction crews will create a new pathway from Fourth Plain to Fort Vancouver Way by Oct. 4.

The official groundbreaking for the STEM facility is 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30. The 70,000 square-foot STEM facility is expected to cost $41 million and be completed in 2016.

The first day of classes at Clark College is Sept. 22.

Skanska also recently built Crestline Elementary School and Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School, both in Vancouver.
