Ellie Boon of Washougal will be among those honored at the UP women’s soccer team’s “Home Grown Player Day” on Sunday at Merlo Field as the Pilots play host to the University of Washington.

The sophomore defender — a Preseason All-West Coast Conference selection — played club soccer for Vancouver United, which has since become part of Washington Timbers Football Club.

“I’d like to invite my friends and soccer fans in the Washougal community to come out to UP for this and other games,” Boon said in a release from the City of Washougal. “You can even get group seats and sit together. I would be honored to have my hometown come out to watch me play.”

The Home Grown Players promotion centers on a celebration of the great soccer culture in the city of Portland and to honor the local student-athletes who play for the Pilots, according to UP. A pre-game poster giveaway featuring these local players and other activities will take place at Merlo Field.

The Pilots and Huskies will kick off at 1 p.m.

EWU’s Black up for Senior CLASS Award

Eastern Washington University senior forward Cassie Black has been selected as a candidate for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer, the organization announced.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence — community, classroom, character and competition.

The Battle Ground High School graduate is EWU’s all-time leading scorer with 20 goals to her name in 55 career appearances. She also holds the record for most game-winning goals with eight and ranks second all-time in career points by two with 43.

A two-time All-Big Sky Conference player and three-time Big Sky All-Academic selection, Black carries a 3.78 GPA and is on schedule to graduate in June 2015 with a degree in biology. She is also active with several volunteer organizations in the Cheney and Spokane areas.

The award winner will be announced during the 2014 Women’s College Cup in December.

Black has two goals and an assist so far this season for the 2-2 Eagles.

“She steadies us out and she doesn’t make errors,” coach Doug English told the school athletics website nnusports.com. “She makes a lot of good plays for us to keep us in system.”

Tuholski posted 131 kills, 41 blocks, 283 digs and 21 service aces as a junior last season. After sharing setting duties as a freshman, she has also continued to fill that role at times for the Crusaders.

Doerfler’s last season starts in Washington

Hawaii Pacific University senior middle blocker Haley Doerfler’s senior season began not only on the U.S. mainland, but in her home state.

The Sharks — formerly known as the Sea Warriors, HPU rebranded its athletic programs over the summer — went 1-3 at Central Washington’s Hampton Inn Wildcat Volleyball Invitational in Ellensburg, falling to three teams ranked among the top 16 in Division II.

The Prairie High School graduate totaled 36 kills and 20 blocks in a win over Cal State Stanislaus and losses to No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 16 Sonoma State. The Sharks also played Tuesday at Western Washington and Wednesday at St. Martin’s to conclude their non-conference schedule.

Doerfler, who carries a 3.70 grade point average as an English major, was named to the Academic All-PacWest Team by the Pacific West Conference.
