Police: Scammer posing as lieutenant

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is warning against a phone scam artist posing as a police lieutenant in an attempt to get people’s money.

The fraudulent caller recently called several local residents and said there was a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to report for jury duty. In reality, none of them had actually been summoned to jury duty. He said that to avoid arrest, they’d have to give him a $500 money card.

Shirley Clark got a voice mail from the scam artist on Wednesday, who claimed he was Lt. Mark Flowers and left his number. The 78 year old told her daughter, who used to work in jail corrections, about the strange call. When the man called again later, he told Clark that she would be arrested if she didn’t follow his instructions.

But Clark suspected that the caller was a fraud. The caller eventually hung up because he probably realized that she had caught onto his scheme, Clark said.

“I don’t want any other senior citizen to get those kind of calls,” she said. “It’s scary … even though you know you’re innocent.”

The sheriff’s office advises anyone who gets a similar call to hang up.
