TOUTLE — A public meeting on a Mount St. Helens long-term sediment management plan for the Toutle and Cowlitz rivers will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Toutle High School, 5050 Spirit Lake Highway.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating several alternatives in a draft environmental document to manage the flood risk for Castle Rock, Kelso and Longview through 2035.

The draft document is available online at www.nwp.usace.army.mil/Missions/Currentprojects/MountStHelensEIS.aspx.

Public comments must be received by email or U.S. Postal Service mail by Oct. 6.

A 1985 plan included construction of a sediment retention structure on the Toutle River plus levee improvements and dredging. The original plan also indicated additional action would be needed after 2000.

Current data shows unless more action is taken the flood risk will increase along the lower 20 miles of the Cowlitz River.

The Corps has identified a preferred alternative of raising the spillway of the sediment retention structure, other actions and dredging as needed.

Written comments need to refer to public notice CENWP-PM-E-14-10 and may be emailed to MSHLongTermPlan@usace.army.mil or mailed to Tim Kuth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District, Portland, Attn: CENWP-PM-F/Mount St. Helens drat SEIS, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR, 97208-2946.
