State Superintendent Randy Dorn announced that five Washington teachers have been selected as state-level finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award is the highest honor for a K-12 mathematics or science teacher. Awards are given annually to teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions.
The finalists were selected over the summer by a statewide selection committee comprised of content area experts and award-winning teachers. Two of them teach in Clark County schools.
Recognized for math, Tara Obermiller is a third-grade teacher at Woodburn Elementary in the Camas School District.
Recognized for science, Meredith Gannon teaches fourth grade at Sacajawea Elementary, Vancouver Public Schools. She is a National Board Certified Teacher.
