Letter: We jump in before examination

Today’s crisis with ISIS is nothing new; America’s lack of understanding of the rest of the world has been our downfall. American exceptionalism or imperialism, are they the same? In the late 1800s it was Cuba and the Philippines, the early 1900s it was Central America, then Vietnam, Iraq and now “Quien sabe” … who knows?

Until we, as a nation, start understanding the world’s cultures before getting involved, we are doomed. Our politicians are using us to further their agendas without really understanding the issues.

You cannot bomb your way to American exceptionalism as some politicians believe. This new problem needs some deep thought before we act, and John Wayne is dead so he can’t save us.
