EVERETT — The Snohomish County Sheriff’s office says a search and rescue dog that worked in the Oso mudslide has been found safely, swimming in a pool.

The owners of Checkers, a golden retriever, let her out her Stanwood home Thursday, but the dog wandered off and did not come back. After seeing Facebook posts about the missing dog, a nearby resident realized the golden retriever she’d seen swimming in her pool Friday morning was Checkers.

On Saturday, the resident called out for Checkers and the dog appeared from the woods. The dog and her handler, Samuel Peterson, were reunited soon after.

Besides a sore paw, Checkers was healthy.
