SEATTLE — A fourth-grade teacher from Seattle is the Washington state teacher of the year for 2015.

Lyon Terry of Lawton Elementary specializes in helping students improve their writing and vocabulary. He runs the school’s safety patrol and started the Walking School Bus program at his school.

The graduate of Reed College in Portland and Portland State University worked in the Highline School District and in New York City Public Schools before coming back to the Pacific Northwest to teach at Lawton.

The nationally board certified teacher has worked at Lawton since 2005.

His own two children have attended Lawton since kindergarten.

Shari Conditt, a history and government teacher at Woodland High School, was among the nine finalists for the award this year. Conditt, a Battle Ground resident, was the school’s first regional finalist.

Conditt began teaching at the school 14 years ago, and she’s become a favorite among staff, faculty and students since for her energetic style. Graduating seniors have chosen her to be the keynote speaker at their commencement ceremony in seven of the past eight years.
