SPOKANE — Just one school security guard will be allowed to carry a gun inside Spokane schools.

Officials announced at the Wednesday night school board meeting that Officer Mark Howard will be armed on district property within the next few weeks. He’s a supervisor stationed downtown who travels to schools in the district.

The Spokesman-Review reports officials agreed early last year to allow school resource officers to carry guns in schools, but they’re still negotiating with the union representing officers about added pay. The district employees also would have to be trained by the Spokane Police Department and become reserve officers.
