CHENEY — A requirement that first-year students live on campus at Eastern Washington University has put a record 2,100 students in dorms.
That compares with an average of 1,700 students the past five years living on the Cheney campus where classes started Wednesday.
The Spokesman-Review reports the idea is that students who are more engaged in campus culture are more likely to stay in school and graduate.
There are exceptions for freshmen who live with their parents or who are married or older than 20.
