BELLINGHAM — The man accused of killing a neighbor’s dog in Bellingham pleaded not guilty Friday to an animal cruelty charge.

KOMO reports David William Latham remains free on $20,000 bail.

Authorities say he shot the dog Sept. 13 because he was annoyed by barking. But the corgi named Molly wasn’t the barking dog.

In a related case, a judge ruled Thursday that it was OK for the Whatcom Humane Society to say on its website that Latham should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. His lawyer, Adrian Madrone, said an official enforcement agency should not take a position on the case.

The Bellingham Herald reported the judge denied the request for a restraining order and said the court couldn’t limit the organization’s right to free speech.
