I was pleased the Vancouver City Council toured pending street projects. A Sept. 20 story reported “Councilors hit the road.” But next time, instead of riding a plush big C-Tran bus, I would seat them all in basic wheelchairs in the back of C-Van buses where every manhole and catch basin feels like a tank trap, capable of shaking loose your dental fillings. After all, the short buses are basically trucks with little in ride smoothing.
Whatever happened to the concept that private streets be maintained to city standards? Try driving down N.E. Eighth Way, which handles medical rehabilitation patients, Alzheimer’s patients, and assisted living apartments. C-Van drivers say that private street is the city’s roughest, especially bad for transporting fragile passengers.
