Tax protester Darby’s land appears to sell

The Clark County Treasurer’s Office is hoping it’s finally sold a troubled Amboy property following its third attempt to unload the property at auction.

The 4.7-acre property belongs to David Darby, an anti-government activist who says his sovereign citizen status precludes him from owing property taxes. The county says he owes more than $25,000.

The county will know whether the sale closes if the high bidder pays $52,445 for the property by the end of the day today. Two previous high bidders backed out of paying the county the days after those auctions.

After the county takes what Darby owes in taxes, he’ll receive the remainder of the money.

Darby has repeatedly said he does not recognize the county’s authority and has no plans to leave his property, however. He plans to challenge an August court ruling authorizing the county to sell the land at auction. A new owner may have to go to court to have him evicted from the property.

“We’ll have to wait and see whether the court accepts his appeal or not,” said Treasurer Doug Lasher.
