Keller, Schmid, Myernick elected to US Soccer Hall of Fame

CHICAGO — Goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who made 102 national team appearances and was on the roster for four World Cups, has been elected to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame along with Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid and the late coach Glenn “Mooch” Myernick.

Keller, elected Wednesday in his first year on the player ballot, started for the U.S. at the 1998 and 2006 World Cups and was a backup in 1990 and 2002. He is the American national team leader in shutouts, and played for Millwall (1992-96), Leicester (1996-99), Rayo Vallecano (1999-01), Tottenham (2001-05), Borussia Monchengladbach (2005-07), Fulham (2007-08) and Seattle (2009-11).

Schmid, voted in from the builder ballot, has coached the Los Angeles Galaxy (1999-05), Columbus (2006-08) and Seattle (2009-present). He led teams to titles in Major League Soccer in 2002 and ’08, the U.S. Open Cup in 2001, ’09, ’10, ’11 and ’14, and the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup in 2000, and also coached UCLA to NCAA championships in 1985, ’90, and ’97.

Myernick, elected from the Veteran Ballot, made 10 appearances for the U.S. as a goalkeeper and won the 1976 Hermann Trophy as the top college player. He was an assistant to U.S. coach Bruce Arena at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and coached Colorado (1997-00), the U.S. under-17 team (1993-95) and the U.S. under-23 team (2003-04). He died in 2006 at age 51.

U.S. soccer no longer has a building for its hall. The one in Oneonta, N.Y., closed in 2010.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has not yet announced a date for the induction ceremony, which is recent years has been held in conjunction with a national team home game.
