YAKIMA — Gov. Jay Inslee has signed into a law a measure aimed at increasing skills and safety training for agricultural workers.

House Bill 1127 would set aside up to $1 million a year to train farm workers on skills such as tractor operation, horticulture and pesticide safety.

The measure passed the House on a 90-8 vote in March before unanimously clearing the Senate this month. Inslee signed the bill into law on Thursday.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that lawmakers must still approve money for the program in the state’s overall budget.

The measure was sponsored by Republican Rep. Bruce Chandler, of Granger, and Democrat Rep. Mike Sells, of Snohomish.
