Letter: Support voting act through Senate

As a college student, I spend a lot of time speaking with young people about their future in our state. We’re so lucky to live in a place that has always looked forward. But there is no question that there is more work to be done. That’s why I’m a supporter of the Washington Voting Rights Act (HB 1745 passed House, in Senate rules committee for second reading).

Fair representation and equal rights are central challenges. In recent months, Yakima has been in the news as the city tries to address these issues. One-third of the folks that call Yakima home are of Hispanic descent, but there has never been a candidate with a Latino name elected to Yakima’s City Council. A lawsuit challenging this outdated, prejudicial election system has cost millions of dollars and dragged on in federal court. As we look toward the future, we have to find a better way.

The WVRA is a way to solve these issues and an important step toward more representative local government. Regardless of age or background, that is a goal that we all are working for.
