Proposed local charter school files notice

The Columbian
Published:

The Washington State Charter School Commission has received eight notices of intent to apply from eight nonprofit organizations. One was from a proposed charter school in Clark County.

This was the second letter of intent for the proposed Bilingual Charter Academy in Vancouver, geared for kindergarten through eighth grade students. The first proposal was denied Oct. 9 by the Charter School Commission.

The proposal for the language-immersion school was spearheaded by Veronika Ovdiyenko, who teaches English-language learners in Evergreen Public Schools and speaks English, Ukrainian and Russian.

The plan is to enroll between 150 and 250 pupils in the school’s first year.

The comprehensive application is due May 15, followed by in-person interviews in late June and a public forum in late July. The commission will vote Aug. 13 on which applications to approve.
