Folks, despite the double meaning, have any of you who have been to Europe wonder why Vancouver and Portland are so like troglodytes in not addressing the option of an Interstate 5 tunnel? European countries (Switzerland, Italy, etc.) have multiple tunnels including the English Channel (Chunnel). The U.S. has a few major tunnels (New York-Hudson River) and (Bart-San Francisco-Oakland).
The Columbia River Crossing planners, especially Vancouver, are archaic neophytes in the discussion of replacing the I-5 Bridge spans. The I-5 “London Bridges” are potentially going to fall down if there’s a major earthquake. Do they mean to tell me that respective governing bodies cannot build a half-mile tunnel under the Columbia River with light rail? Is it money? Priorities? Vancouver and Portland need to get out of the Stone Age and deliver. Federal dollars, tolls, and the Oregon and Washington legislatures are waiting the verdict. Time is money.
