Pacific University freshman Jelena Vidovic was named First Team All-Northwest Conference in voting by NWC coaches.

The Union High School graduate is among eight players selected to the first team announced Monday.

Vidovic was one of three freshman named to the squad.

Vidovic had one of the strongest freshman seasons by a conference player in recent history, according to the school website goboxers.com, finishing with a 14-2 record in singles and a 9-7 record in doubles.

She introduced herself to the NWC by winning her first six singles matches and then winning another eight in a row.

She had victories over two of the conference’s top players, a 6-1, 6-2 win over Morgan Lawless on Feb. 22 and a 6-4, 6-4 win over NWC Player of the Year Courtney Lawless of Whitman.

Her only losses came in a three-set thriller to Ella Riddle of Linfield and a two-set loss Summer Garrison of Lewis & Clark.

Vidovic was the No. 14 ranked singles player in the west region by the ITA in their April 9 poll.

After losing her first three doubles matches of the season, Vidovic later won seven in a row toward the end of the season.

“Jelena took the conference by storm and showed that she going to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come,” coach Brian Jackson told goboxers.com. “Jelena not only won all but two of her singles matches, but became one of our strongest doubles players, winning matches with a number of different partners. We are very proud of Jelena.”

Pacific finished 6-10, 3-9 in NWC play.

Women’s track and field: Arn named top field athlete of NWC meet

George Fox University senior Charity Arn was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet at the Northwest Conference Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Bruins’ Stoffer Family Stadium in Newberg, Ore.

The Woodland High School graduate, who dominated the heptathlon competition at the multi-events portion of the meet held previously, was co-champion in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 4¼ inches and was runner-up in the high jump at 5-1¼.

Arn also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.48 seconds and helped the George Fox 4×400 relay team that placed third in 4 minutes, 0.39 seconds.

The Bruins finished second to Whitworth by a margin of 218⅓-191, despite winning the most events of the meet.

Track and field: Porter sets two more Saints school records

Saint Martin’s University junior Shannon Porter set Saints program records in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters Saturday at the 34th Western Washington University Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in Bellingham.

The Hockinson High School graduate — who already set school records in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters this spring — won both events with times of 4 minutes, 35.56 seconds and 10:03.58.

The previous records were 4:36.15 and 10:42.10, respectively.

Baseball: Hamilton sets WSU career saves record

Washington State University sophomore Ian Hamilton set a program record with his 25th career save Monday in the Cougars’ 3-0 win at rival Washington.

The Skyview High School graduate closed the door in the ninth striking out the side after loading the bases.

Hamilton’s 10th save of the season gave him sole possession of first place on the WSU all-time career saves list passing Reed Rainey (24).

Hamilton has 10 saves and two losses in 20 appearances this season, posting an earned run average of 2.39.
