Insitu gets $78M contract with Navy, Marine Corps

The Columbian
Published:

Bingen-based Insitu has secured a $78 million contract with the Navy and Marine Corps to build what are called small, tactical, unmanned aircraft systems, the company reported last week.

The contract calls for the Boeing drone-making subsidiary to build six of its RQ-21A Blackjack systems, which the company said will be used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

RQ-21A has a larger payload mass, volume and power than other small unmanned aircraft systems used by the Marines, Insitu reported. Its portfolio of payload options provides “immediate situational awareness for land and maritime missions,” according to Insitu.

The aircraft is 8.9 feet long and has a maximum speed of 86 miles per hour. It can fly as high as 19,500 feet and can remain operational for 24 hours.

The company gave no timeline for delivery of the six new aircraft systems.
