Commercial huckleberry harvesting begins Monday in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Huckleberry picking for personal use remains free, with no permit required. Personal use is considered three gallons of huckleberries per year.

Anyone harvesting more than three gallons or selling any huckleberries must obtain a commercial permit, available at ranger district offices in Trout Lake and Randle and the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument office in Chelatchie.

Commercial permits cost $40 for 14 days or $75 for the season. They will not be issued until Monday.

The permits include camping conditions that require all garbage and human waste to be removed fro the forest and a maximum of 14 days camping per site.

Rakes or mechanical devices for berry harvest are not permitted, as they may damage plants.

State law required commercial buyers and sellers of huckleberries to register their sales transactions. For more details, go online to www.fs.usda.gov/main/giffordpinchot/passes-permits/forestproducts.

A portion of the Mount Adams Wilderness is closed to entry due to recent forest fires.
