On Major League Soccer’s trade deadline day, the Portland Timbers made a move they hope will pay off down the road.

Portland acquired 19-year-old forward Michael Seaton from D.C. United for an undisclosed amount of targeted allocation money and an international roster spot through Dec. 31. The 6-foot-0 Seaton will likely spend the rest of this season with Timbers 2, the club’s United Soccer League team.

A Jamaican international, Seaton made five MLS appearances for D.C. United, none this season.

In the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Seaton made 24 appearances on loan with the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer League, scoring eight goals.

Seaton was a member of the Jamaican national team that lost to Mexico in the recent Gold Cup final, coming on as a late substitute in that match for his 13th appearance with Jamaica.

Signed as a Homegrown Player by D.C. United in January 2013, Seaton is the first player to play in MLS who was born after the league began play in 1996. He has United States citizenship, so he will not occupy an international roster spot.

Thorns acquire England forward

The Portland Thorns added another attacking player on Thursday, acquiring England midfielder Lianne Sanderson in a trade with Seattle. Sanderson, 27, made two appearances for England at the recent Women’s World Cup and drew the penalty kick in England’s 1-0 win over Germany in the third-place game.

With Boston during the first two seasons of the National Women’s Soccer League, Sanderson had 10 goals and 10 assists in 41 games. Prior to the World Cup, she played for Arsenal of England’s Women’s Soccer League.

On Thursday, the Breakers traded her NWSL rights to Seattle, which then sent Sanderson to the Thorns in a deal that also included a swap of 2016 NWSL draft picks.

Sanderson played for Thorns coach Paul Riley with the Philadelphia Independence of Women’s Pro Soccer.

“Lianne is a bona fide creator with ability to hurt you with a final ball or beat you on the dribble,” Riley said.

The Thorns host Chicago on Sunday.
