Letter: Distrust flared by fear-mongering

The Columbian
Published: August 6, 2015, 5:00pm

The present atmosphere of distrust with our government and politicians is being reinforced by our own feelings of fear and past lies that have led us to a decade-plus of war. America is going through its fear stage again.

The debate over the Iran nuclear treaty has brought out the same stories of distrust with the Iranian regime; just like we heard about Saddam Hussein, weapons of mass destruction, and association with al-Qaida.

The Reagan administration dealt with Iran during the Iran Contra Affair, talking to Iran and financing rebels in Nicaragua who were considered terrorists by many nations. What happened to “we don’t talk to terrorists”?

It’s time that all Americans who are eligible to vote start reading and getting involved, otherwise we will be at war on a permanent basis. Media coverage has become talking points with no substance and less critical thinking needed to understand the importance of our election in 2016.
