Weather Eye: After dry, dry months, maybe break out the rain-dance shoes

While we are starved for rain, parts of the Rocky Mountain States are getting deluges. From Colorado into South Dakota, it has rained, hailed and rained to the point of flash flooding everywhere.

Meanwhile, the best we can do are sprinkles, sprinkles, sprinkles. There was some hope Monday evening as thunderstorms erupted along the Cascades — we weather folks were hoping for one to drift over our way.

It was muggy Monday with the southerly flow of air and increased cloudiness. Still it managed to reach the mid- to upper-80s around Clark County, good weather for the refreshment stands at the Clark County Fair.

I mentioned in my last column that it was raining sideways Saturday at the Washington Coast. I don’t know if the rain blew across the top of my rain gauge there, but I measured just a tenth of an inch of rain. By evening, the sun was out; Sunday, it was warm and sunny again.

We continue to have an unsettled air mass over us today and Wednesday so there is still a chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms. We need to do a rain dance, I think. Then high pressure rebounds and the weekend is looking mighty nice.

The last measurable rain in Vancouver fell July 26. Going back to May 1 — three and a half months — we have received only 1.34 inches of rain.

Driving to the coast Friday along Interstate 5 in Cowlitz County I could see many trees so stressed from the lack of rain that they are in full autumn colors. Others are dying, including some fir trees.
