Community notebook: Washougal paddleboard event set for weekend

The second Standup Paddleboard Salmon Classic will take place on Sunday on the Columbia River at Cottonwood Beach in Washougal.

The races will begin at 10 a.m. with the novice and youth races over a 2-mile course. The 4-mile short-course race for recreational participants will start at 10:30 a.m. The 8-mile race for professional competitors is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Online registration is open through Friday at www.supsalmonclassic.com. There is also registration at a pre-race party from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Reflection Plaza in Washougal, or on Sunday between 7 and 8:30 a.m.

Cost to compete is $50 for the long course and the short course, $30 for the novice and the youth races.

Spectators can watch from the beach.

The SUP Salmon Classic follows the popular Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge, which took place Saturday and Sunday at Hood River, Ore. Those races included some of the top paddle board racers in the world.

Washougal golfer Oregon Senior medalist

Debbie Friede of Washougal was the women’s medalist on Monday during stroke-play qualifying at the Oregon Senior Amateur Championship at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell, Ore.

Friede shot a 2-over-par 74 thanks to a strong back 9. She was 4-over 40 on the front 9 but had four birdies on the back nine. The 2012 champion of this tournament, she gets a bye into Tuesday afternoon’s women’s semifinal match.

In the men’s 32-player championship bracket includes these players from Clark County: Vernon Pellman III, Gregg Guernsey, Tim O’Neal, George Shite and Brad Karns. Pellman, seventh on Monday, was the top golfer from Clark County in Monday’s qualifying round with a 1-over-par 73.

Hood-to-Coast Relay is Friday

The 34th Hood to Coast Relay takes place Friday and Saturday.

The 198-mile footrace begins at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood and ends on the beach at Seaside, Ore. The course does not enter Washington, but many local runners will be among the 12,600 participating.

Teams will depart Timberline between 5 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Friday, with the fastest teams finishing Saturday morning in Seaside.

An additional 400 12-person teams will take part in the 21st Portland to Coast Walk, covering 129 miles. Teams representing Southwest Washington schools will race in the 50-team Portland to Coast High School Challenge.

CCYF jamboree is Saturday

Clark County Youth Football will hold its season kickoff jamboree on Saturday at District Stadium in Battle Ground. The scrimmages begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m.

For the seventh year in a row, a food drive for the Clark County Food Bank is being held in conjunction with the jamboree.

Two finish CCRC race under 16 minutes

Oscar Bauman edged Jesse McChesney at the finish line of the Clark County Running Club’s Marine Park 5-kilometer run on Wednesday.

Both runners were timed in 15 minutes and 54 seconds, more than two minutes faster than the rest of the runners in a field of 143 participants. Results for the 119 of them who had their time recorded are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

This Wednesday, the CCRC run is at Pacific Park. It will start at 7:15 and runners have 45 minutes to complete as many 1.4-mile laps around the park as they want. Pacific Park is at 1515 N.E. 164th Ave.
