Washougal — The school year hasn’t started yet, but Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School teacher Darcy Hickey already has some students working. With fires raging in Skamania County, firefighters are using Cape Horn and Canyon Creek Middle School as base camps, so Hickey reached out to some former students, and students starting her class in the fall, and invited them over to make cards and posters thanking the firefighters for their work. Hickey had students and their families over for two nights working on their notes, and they also filled bags with trail mix and other goodies, which Hickey then delivered to the schools on Aug. 20. “These brave firefighters are eating and sleeping at our schools, away from their families,” Hickey said in a release from the school district. “They are working incredibly long hours to keep our community safe. I thought it would be nice to give back to them, encourage them, show that we support them and are thankful for all they are doing.”
