This school year, Central Washington University will make tuition more affordable to families whose lives have been altered by the wildfires in the north-central region of the state.
About 300 students whose families have been displaced by the wildfires will receive $1,000 in tuition waivers, CWU announced.
“Wildfire of this magnitude is life-changing for businesses, for local government, for schools – and especially for families,” President James Gaudino said Monday in a written statement. “As families struggle to deal with the losses resulting from the fire, lowering tuition bills is a small way we can help them recover from this catastrophe.”
It is not the first time the university has contributed in the face of natural disasters. According to a news release, CWU waived room-and-board fees and other football camp costs for Darrington High School players training on campus in the aftermath of last year’s deadly landslide near Oso. During the 2012 Taylor Bridge and Table Mountain fires and other recent fires, CWU provided communications and housing for the Red Cross and fire crews.
