MINNEAPOLIS — A construction worker at the Minnesota Vikings’ new stadium died and a second worker was seriously injured when they fell Wednesday morning while doing roofing work.

The employees of Berwald Roofing were working on the north side of the project when they fell at about 7:45 a.m., said John Wood, a vice president for Mortenson Construction, the general contractor.

The workers were taken to a hospital, where one died and the other was in serious condition, Wood said.

Work on the project was stopped for the day.

In a statement, the Vikings called it an “extremely sad day” for the organization and offered thoughts and prayers for the family of the worker killed, the individual who was injured and more than 1,000 construction employees who are affected by the accident.

U.S. Bank Stadium is expected to open in fall 2016. The more than $1 billion stadium is being built on the site of the team’s former stadium, the Metrodome, on the eastern edge of downtown Minneapolis.
