OLYMPIA — Federal agricultural statisticians will be surveying Northwest fruit growers about their use of farm chemicals starting this month.

Surveyors will call selected farmers in 11 states, including Washington and Oregon, to set up in-person interviews about pesticide use and prevention of microbial contaminants, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service regional field office in Olympia.

Results, slated for publication on the agency’s website in July 2016, will help measure the impacts of the Food Safety Modernization Act, a 2011 federal law that drastically tightens food contamination controls being implemented by the Food and Drug Administration, the release said.

The last time the Northwest office conducted the fruit chemical use survey was in 2011, said Christopher Mertz, director of the field office.
