Letter: Hateful methods won’t keep us safe

I believe that Republicans and Democrats alike are inspired by what’s written on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” But it’s interesting to note that our Lady Liberty comes from sculptor Frederic Bartholdi’s reworked sketch of an Egyptian peasant woman and in those times, most likely a Muslim.

Most Republicans are not racist. But sadly, some of their leaders are fanning the flames of intolerance with talk of mosque closings, a database for tracking American Muslims and ID cards. Their tough talk is nothing more than racist stereotyping. We’ve been here before when terror struck at the heart of the American people. In reaction to Pearl Harbor, the U.S. established internment camps for Japanese Americans. When legal instruments are invoked in this manner, we’re legalizing racism.

Attacks on innocent American Muslims won’t keep you safe from terror any more than the Republican strategy of duct-taped windows would have saved you from the chemical attack that didn’t happen after 9/11. The Republicans even used hatred against the French when their government refused to jump on the Bush-Cheney administration bandwagon to invade Iraq. Do you remember “freedom fries”?

If we are to build a more perfect union, we as a nation must not fall for hateful methods.
