Weather Eye: We ended chilly, drier than average month with taste of winter

We had a taste of winter weather early Monday as a weak system moved through and dropped moisture into the cold pool of air overhead. That resulted in a little freezing rain, sleet and even a few reports of snow flurries. Most areas had trace amounts, just enough to wet the streets but with little slow-down in traffic.

Had there been more moisture associated with the front, we could have had a nasty weather event. Another storm moves inland late today with heavier rainfall, but temperatures will be too warm to cause any problem except out in the Gorge, where east winds will continue until late Wednesday.

Vancouver dipped to a chilly 19 degrees for an overnight low early Monday. That broke the record low of 20 degrees from 1976 and 1962 and was the lowest temperature so far in 2015. On Jan. 1, Vancouver had a low of 20 degrees. We have to go back to Dec. 31 to find a colder temperature, and that was 17 degrees. In Salmon Creek, I recorded 16 degrees Monday morning.

One year ago today, Vancouver had a high of 37 degrees and an overnight low of 24 degrees, and it was a dry day. Our average high and low for Dec. 1 are 49 degrees and 37 degrees.

It appeared as of 5 p.m. Monday that Vancouver would end up with 4.56 inches of rain for the month, almost 1.25 inches below average. The average mean temperature was 44.4 degrees, 2.2 degrees below normal. So, a chilly and somewhat drier than average month.

We will warm up as the week progresses, with highs back in the 50s and overnight lows warmer than our high temperatures have been the past few days, in the 40s. Lots of rain will fall and the snow levels will be rather high, around 5,000 or 6,000 feet. That may drop down to the passes by the weekend.
