OLYMPIA — State Treasurer Jim McIntire won’t seek re-election next year.

McIntire, a Democrat who is in his second term, announced his decision Wednesday. He says that he wants to spend his final year in office focusing on protecting the state’s credit rating and pushing for reforming state education financing.

The state is currently under a contempt order from the state Supreme Court for its lack of progress toward fully paying the cost of basic education.

The state treasurer is responsible for $400 billion of transactions per year, the investment of $16 billion of short term assets, and public deposits of $6 billion.
