Letter: Safeguards designed into project

There will no doubt be a large contingency of our population standing up to oppose the siting of the oil terminal at the Port of Vancouver. However, much of their opposition is based on historical incidents that have occurred where current or proposed environmental safeguards have not been enacted.

The proposal for this terminal has significant safeguards designed into the project that mitigate the most serious potentials for accidents. Safer designed rail cars, reduced speeds, terminal design standards and training will all decrease the possibility of an environmental catastrophe. The economic advantages outweigh the environmental negatives for this project and it should move forward.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
