No charges for Spokane deputy in fatal bike crash

SPOKANE — The Spokane prosecutor’s office says a sheriff’s deputy will not be charged in the death of a 15-year-old in a bike accident last May in Spokane Valley.

The Spokesman-Review reports three separate investigations into the bike accident have determined that a speeding patrol car driven by a sheriff’s deputy did not strike the teen as preliminary reports suggested.

Instead, investigators found that Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Bodman braked and swerved to the right, missing West Valley High School student Ryan Holyk as he and a friend crossed the street on bicycles on May 23.

The prosecutor’s office says neither Bodman’s car nor Holyk’s bicycle had any damage that indicated a collision had taken place. Apparently the teen flipped over his handlebars and landed on his head. He died from his injuries on June 4.

Investigators did find that Bodman was driving more than 70 mph in a 35 mph zone without his emergency lights or siren when he nearly struck Holyk.
