Camas — Two Camas High School students spent the last three months teaching a class of Prune Hill Elementary School fourth-graders about financial literacy.

Shannon Ahearn and Nataley Dormier, both from Camas DECA, taught the students as part of their “Pay It Forward” campaign.

Each week, Ahearn and Dormier focused on a basic financial principle to help the students, often teaching them through a game. They played charades to go over the difference between consumers and producers, and wrote out short and long-term goals and how to reach them.

The fourth-graders were also given fake money each week to buy prizes, teaching them the value of saving money, as well as how to exchange cash or credit for goods.

One of the final activities saw the elementary students come up with T-shirt designs incorporating everything they learned.
