Ecology wants feedback on clean-fuels rule

SEATTLE — The state Department of Ecology is seeking feedback on a controversial rule aimed at reducing the carbon pollution of transportation fuels over time.

A preliminary draft released Wednesday outlines a low carbon fuel standard similar to California’s first-in-the-nation mandate.

The idea is to reduce greenhouse gases by requiring fuel producers to reduce the carbon content of fuels by 10 percent over 10 years. Fuel suppliers could develop their own fuels, mix gasoline with alternative fuels such as biodiesel, or buy credits from other companies.

Republican lawmakers and some businesses have opposed the idea, saying it will raise gas prices and hurt consumers.

Gov. Jay Inslee last month asked Ecology to draft a low carbon fuel standard and get comments from legislators and others. But he says he wants feedback before starting a formal rule-making process.
