Vancouver students, schools receive BPA Science Bowl recognition

2 students named All-Stars; 2 middle schools honored

Two students from Vancouver were recognized as All-Stars in the BPA Regional Science Bowl over the past two weekends in Portland, and two Vancouver middle schools were honored for creating videos celebrating science.

Ming Liu of Mountain View High School was recognized as a top performer in the morning rounds Saturday, correctly answering the most questions in her round. Monica Chang of Shahala Middle School won similar honors during middle school competition on Jan. 31.

Additionally, King’s Way Christian Middle School and Shahala Middle School were recognized among other winning entrants in SciClips, a competition sponsored by Google in which competing teams created short videos that expressed their enjoyment of science. Winning teams received a gift certificate for supplies for their sponsoring school’s science laboratory. Coaches for the winning teams also received a trophy in the form of an Einstein bobblehead.

Westview High School Team 1 of Portland won top honors Saturday and a chance to compete in the National Science Bowl. Mountain View High School came in fourth place.

Last weekend, Stoller Middle School Team 1 of Beaverton, Ore., won the middle school division of the BPA Regional Science Bowl to advance.
