Letter: State system is regressive taxation

The Columbian
Published: February 8, 2015, 4:00pm

The Institution for Taxation and Economic Policy, a nonprofit think tank, states that Washington state has the most unfair state and local taxes in the nation as a percentage of income. Look up “Who Pays” on the Internet to review its analysis of the tax systems in all 50 states.

The lowest 20 percent pay 16.8 percent of income and the richest 1 percent pay 2.4 percent of income. That is seven times more for the lowest-income people.

We, in Washington state, have a regressive tax system (sales taxes) with no progressive income tax. This state tax system assures the rich will do well, the poor will always remain poor. You throw in corporate tax giveaways and you will see why Washington state’s schools, etc., are underfunded.
